The Anguk Seon Meditation Center, housed in the historic Fitzgerald House, offers a serene space for Ganhwa Seon meditation, education, and community engagement. Preserving cultural heritage, it serves as a bridge between Korean Seon Buddhism and the broader community.
The LA Anguk Seon Meditation Center, established in 2022, marks the international expansion of a tradition that began in Busan in 1989 and later grew to Seoul. Founded by Subul Sunim—ordained in 1975 and trained through years of intensive retreats—this lineage has guided tens of thousands in Ganhwa Seon meditation. The LA center continues this tradition under Ven. Woongsahn, a disciple of Subul Sunim and former abbot of Daeunsa in Korea, who now leads teaching and outreach in the United States. Located in the historic Fitzgerald House (built in 1903 and designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #258), the center carries forward Seon Mediation through retreats, education, and community engagement, representing a new chapter in the global transmission of Korean Seon Buddhism.
LA 안국선원은 유서 깊은 피츠제럴드 하우스에 자리한 선명상 수행 도량으로, 간화선 수행과 불교 교육, 지역 사회와의 교류를 위한 공간입니다. 역사적 건축을 보존하며 한국 선불교와 현대 사회를 잇는 가교로서 평화와 자비의 가치를 전합니다.
1989년 부산에서 시작되어 서울 등으로 확장된 선명상 수행의 전통이 해외로 이어진 결과로서, 2022년에 미국 로스앤젤레스에 설립된 도량입니다. 창건자인 수불스님은 1975년 범어사에서 출가하여 오랜 선명상 수행을 거친 후 안국선원을 열고 수 만 명이 넘는 수행자들에게 간화선을 지도해 왔습니다. 수불스님의 제자인 웅산스님이 선원장으로 부임하여 수행 지도와 포교를 이어가고 있으며, 미주 지역에서 재가불자 교육과 간화선 보급에 힘쓰고 있습니다. 1903년에 건립되어 로스앤젤레스 역사문화기념물 제258호로 지정된 건축물인 피츠제럴드 하우스에 자리한 이 도량은 전통 선명상 수행을 계승하면서 한국의 선불교를 세계에 전하는 새로운 장을 열고 있습니다.
